Allergan is to create 20 new jobs at its facility in Westport, Co Mayo.

The US-based pharmaceutical company has announced a $10m investment in new medical technology at the Mayo site.

Allergan is best known as the owner of the patent for Botox which is used to treat muscle stiffness and spasms and in cosmetic surgery.

The new investment will see Allergan manufacturing a medical device used in a number of surgical procedures in Westport.

'Westport has been chosen as the manufacturing location for this product as we can combine our state-of-the-art engineering capabilities alongside our scientific expertise,' commented Pat O'Donnell, managing director of Allergan Pharmaceuticals Ireland.

'We are pleased to be continuing our track record of significant investment into Ireland as we develop and commercialise new products and technologies,' he added.
